The journey of the European project SecretED, an initiative funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program and dedicated to the development of marine bio-surfactants and siderophores through the use of advanced biotechnologies, ends in Athens. The research program, which commenced in 2021, involved scientific and industrial partners from across Europe, including Sphera Encapsulation, representing the encapsulation sector.
SecretED was created to promote the development of new technologies for producing bio-compounds derived from marine and extremophilic microorganisms. Among the central themes are the genetic design of microbial strains, the optimization of fermentation processes, the purification of active metabolites, and their encapsulation for industrial applications—the areas of impact range from cosmetics to pharmaceuticals, from green chemistry to sustainable agriculture.
During the project, Sphera Encapsulation applied its expertise in developing advanced encapsulation systems to enhance the stability, efficacy, and availability of marine biosurfactants and siderophores. The goal is to promote their effective use in industrial production processes while ensuring safety, performance, and sustainability.
In particular, the contribution of Sphera Encapsulation focused on:
In this context, encapsulation represented a strategic lever for developing sustainable solutions applicable in fields such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, agrochemistry, and marine chemistry. Please find out more about our experience in the sector by reading the article on this page.
The final meeting, scheduled in Athens, represents a key moment for discussion among scientific partners, industrial stakeholders, and institutions. The event represents a significant opportunity to present the results achieved, discuss prospects, and consolidate collaborations between partners.
For Sphera Encapsulation, the final event marks the completion of a research path aimed at promoting more sustainable and innovative production models, in line with the European objectives of transition towards a bio-based economy.
The contribution to the SECRETed project is part of Sphera Encapsulation’s broader strategy, which has always invested in researching tailor-made technological solutions for the delivery of bio-functional active ingredients. The encapsulation of marine biosurfactants represents just one of the areas in which our expertise can make a difference, bringing added value to supply chains that are increasingly oriented towards ecological transition.
We will continue to work on offering reliable and sustainable solutions that can respond to the ever-evolving needs of the market.
