Sphera Encapsulation, the first Italian company entirely dedicated to research and development in encapsulation technologies, will be among the key protagonists of Formula XII 2025, a prestigious international conference focused on formulation science. On this occasion, the results of two scientific projects developed by our team will be presented.

Participation in Formula XII 2025 represents a significant milestone for our company, which is dedicated to transforming encapsulation technologies into solutions with a high impact on applications. The following paragraphs will provide a brief introduction to the topics and primary evidence of the two studies that will be presented in Sofia.

Engineered protein nanoparticles for intracellular drug delivery

The first project presented by Sphera Encapsulation explores the use of protein nanoparticles for the controlled release of antitumor agents. The nanoparticles, made from protein were developed according to a patented approach (WO2020104970A2) of our company.

The obtained Core-Shell NPs exhibit a spherical morphology, high stability, and pH-dependent release, making them ideal for tumor microenvironments. In vitro, they demonstrated a high capacity for cell penetration and selective cytotoxicity towards cancer cells, with significantly lower toxicity towards healthy cells. The results obtained open new perspectives for the application of nanoencapsulation technologies in the oncology field, leading to more effective and less invasive therapies.

Bio-encapsulation of PCMs for building energy efficiency

The second scientific poster focuses on a completely different but equally innovative field: the integration of PCMs (Phase Change Materials) in building materials through bio-encapsulation. The goal is to improve the thermal management of buildings and contribute to the development of sustainable construction solutions.

Using natural and renewable materials the research team created micro- and nanoparticles using techniques like coacervation and spray drying. These particles, once integrated into building matrices (such as cement and concrete), demonstrated good structural compatibility, high thermal storage capacity, and excellent performance in terms of durability.

This project demonstrates how encapsulation technologies, when applied to strategic contexts such as the building sector, can make concrete contributions to the energy transition and the development of innovative materials.

Formula XII 2025 is one of the most important scientific conferences worldwide in the field of chemical formulations. Organized by the University of Sofia (Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering), this year’s edition will take place in the Bulgarian capital, attracting researchers, industries, and professionals from all over the world.
